Stellenbeschreibung

PhD Student "Electronic Structure and Coupled Degrees of Freedom of Functional Solids from Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering" Reference No.: PS 2024/15 We do science with photons and enable synchrotron radiation research. With optimized and world leading synchrotron experimental capabilities, we address phase transitions and dynamics on elemental time and length scales in functional materials and molecular systems. As a doctoral student, you will contribute actively to our research in this field. The topic of your thesis: “Electronic Structure and Coupled Degrees of Freedom of Functional Solids from Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering” Your Tasks * You conduct, analyse, and interpret synchrotron radiation spectroscopic investigations to deduce physical and chemical properties of condensed matter with respect to electronic structure and elementary excitations and coupling. * You apply and develop conceptual models of X-ray matter interaction and soft X-ray spectroscopy, in particular resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. * You communicate the results through publication and conference participation. Your Profile * Master’s degree / diploma in physics, chemistry, or a similar field with a current research topic on spectroscopic approaches and/or functional materials * Aptitude to research with synchrotron radiation * Very good knowledge in the use of modern analytic and computational tools * Fluent command of English as well as willingness to acquire basic skills in German * Fulfill the requirements of a PhD at the Universität Potsdam Your Benefits at HZB * Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers * Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity and implementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods * Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from the HZB Graduate Centre and HZB Postdoc Office * Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund * 30 days holiday/year * Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programmes * Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flexitime, part-time, hybrid working * And a team that is looking forward to meeting you! Fixed term contract for 48 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund). How to apply We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by19.01.2025.
