Scientist / Energy Policy Advisor (f/m/d) Reference No.: GF 2024/27 The GESA project at HZB aims to contribute to the energy transition in future EU member states such as Ukraine. GESA stands for Global Energy System Analysis: Through data and modeling, policy papers and capacity building, we will offer scientifically sound policy advice for the energy transition in the German partner countries, especially in the EU candidate countries. GESA hosts e.g. the Green Deal Ukraїna project that supports Ukrainian decision makers, experts and society in making future-proof energy and climate policy decisions. To ensure lasting impact, we are developing a think tank that will support Ukraine in three missions: (1) sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy system, (2) successful accession to the European Union, and (3) decarbonisation of Ukraine’s energy system and economy. Being part of one of Germany’s largest energy research centres, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, provides an excellent foundation for effectively contributing to GESA's mission. As an energy policy advisor, you will help our team to exploit the potential of our young project fully. However, you can count on the support of junior colleagues and mentoring by senior colleagues * You organize content-related exchanges with stakeholders and of results presentations. You support for the capacity building and data modeling work packages * You participate in the development and establishment (including processes) of the scientific think tank in close coordination with the overall project management Your Profile * Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field like climate science, energy policy, sustainable energy, environmental policy, and engineering * Sound basis in scientific programming (Python, R, Matlab …) * Ideally 1–2 years of relevant work experience * Some understanding of European and international energy transition goals, trends, technologies, policies and business interests * Experience in producing readable research outputs * Fluent command of English * Language skills in German, Ukrainian or Polish are an asset Your Benefits at HZB * Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers * Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity and implementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods * Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from the HZB Graduate Centre and HZB Postdoc Office * Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund * 30 days holiday/year * Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programmes * Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flexitime, part-time, hybrid working * And a team that is looking forward to meeting you!
